Manuscript Editing

Get your science fiction, fantasy or speculative fiction novel ready for the attention of readers and publishers

Homepage Hero.png

You’ve completed a draft of your story and are now seeking professional help as you approach the revision process. These comprehensive packages will address every angle of your draft so you can feel confident your story is ready for publishing.

Whether you’re aiming for traditional or self-publishing, readers and publishers alike have a low tolerance for errors of any kind, and they can often tell when a book is unedited. You can minimize bad reviews and rejection by having your manuscript professionally edited.

Developmental editing is sometimes referred to as substantive editing. For fiction, this type of editing involves big picture review. Plot, world-building, character development, voice, story structure, writing quality, dialogue—everything.

There are two packages I offer for your manuscript edit; The Full Edit and The Short Story Edit. My standard rates start at $0.03 per word, so these packages offer exceptional value for any first-time novelist.

Developmental Editing Packages

The Full Edit

A comprehensive review and editorial letter for your entire manuscript.

⚔️ BEST VALUE ⚔️

The Full Edit is a comprehensive edit of your entire manuscript, from the big picture down to the fine details. Starting at the top - the larger aspects like plot, character, theme, scene structure, pacing - all the way down to POV consistency, subplots, and dialogue. You’ve laid a foundation and now seek a professional set of eyes so that you can receive structured feedback, encouragement, and suggestions on the next steps to take.

This package is the best option if you plan to submit your manuscript to literary agents or self-publish with the confidence that your book will stand out and capture the attention of readers and publishers alike.

Minimum of a complete first draft required.

    • Initial consultation before you lock into the package. To make sure this package is right for you and discuss your manuscript + goals and intentions.

    • With your goals and intentions in mind, I complete a comprehensive developmental edit of your manuscript. The time this takes varies based on the length of the manuscript. Typically, I work at a 1,250-1,500 words per hour pace.

      • During this time, I will contact you with regular progress updates via message/email.

    • Once completed, you’ll receive the full edit and all of its components. You’ll have the time to digest - however long you require - before we schedule a second call for questions and clarifications. This second call is typically longer than the first.

    • If there are any further questions, you can send me up to 5 follow up emails/messages.

    • I do all edits in new documents or copies of the original manuscript. This allows you to decide on the changes and edits you agree with, without them being forced onto you.

    • Charge is based on word count. $0.03 per word.

    • A detailed editorial letter covering all aspects of your manuscript, and a copy of the manuscript with in-text comments and further suggestions.

    • The editorial letter provides a thorough overview. Sectioned as follows:

      1. An introduction and overview

      1. Highlights and strengths of the manuscript

      2. Areas that have room to grow, suggestions and feedback for consideration

      3. General comments, ideas, or questions. Things that don’t fall under the above sections

      4. Your top 3 most important next steps.

    • The in-text comments will be done in a copy of the manuscript document, leaving your original untouched. These cover the smaller suggestions, strengths, and things to note. All comments are color coded for easy viewing.

    • Guidance on the next steps for your story so that you can stay on track. Whether it’s smaller changes, another round of editing, or if you’re ready to find literary agents/begin self-publishing.

    • Access to the craft of fiction self-paced course

    • Access to the self-guided revision worksheets

    • Access to the world-building template

The Short Story Edit

A comprehensive developmental edit of your short story or novelette.

📖 SHORT STORY, BIG IDEAS📖

When trying to publish short fiction, often times rejection doesn’t come from the quality of story, but the misalignment of goals between story and publisher. Just as, if not more important than story quality, is to consider where you submit.

The Short Story Edit offers both a comprehensive edit of your short story, and a curated list of Literary Magazines to submit to based on your story’s vision and niche. The list of magazines is personalized to provide the highest chance at getting your story seen and published, so you can get compensation and recognition.

Package is for short fiction only. Maximum word count of 20,000.

    • Initial consultation before you lock into the package to establish your priorities. We’ll discuss what you want most out of publishing your short story. Payment, recognition, community, portfolio development, etc.

    • Based on your priorities, I will curate a list of magazines and journals to target. You’ll get the chance to look over the list before the editing process begins.

    • Your story receives a developmental edit. Feedback and suggestions will be made with the targeted magazines and journals in mind. The editing process is slightly different for short stories, but it’s naturally a faster process due to length of the story. Typically, I work at a 1,000 words per hour pace for short stories.

      • During this time, I will contact you with regular progress updates via message/email.

    • Once completed, we’ll review the edit on a second call. This is the time for questions, discussions, and creating a checklist for submission. From here, it is up to you which changes you make and which magazines to submit to. I do all edits in copies of the original manuscript. This allows you to decide on the changes and edits you agree with, without them being forced onto you.

    • If there are any further questions, you can send me up to 5 follow up emails/messages.

    • Charge for the developmental edit is based on word count. $0.03 per word. This rate remains the same up to 3 short stories. If you want an edit of more than 3 short stories, we will discuss rates on our initial consultation.

    • Charge for the curated list of magazines is a flat rate of $150. This is per short story, as each story gets their own curated list.

    • A developmental edit of your short story. The feedback and suggestions made are based on a few factors:

      • What the magazines tend to publish

      • What the editor-in-chief (the one with final say) tends to gravitate towards

      • What can be changed to help your story stand out, while also maintaining your original vision and intent

    • An editorial letter covering all feedback made on your short story, and a copy of the manuscript with in-text comments and further suggestions. The editorial letter is sectioned as follows:

      • Introduction

      • Strengths

      • Areas to Consider

      • Which Magazines to submit to and for what reasons

    • The in-text comments will be done in a copy of the manuscript document, leaving your original untouched. These cover the smaller suggestions, strengths, and things to note. All comments are color coded for easy viewing.

    • Access to the craft of fiction self-paced course

    • Access to the self-guided revision worksheets
